The Hyatt Beehive Mural project in my Fall ‘22 P The Hyatt Beehive Mural project in my Fall ‘22 Professional Practice course serendipitously came my way when I was struggling with how to fill out the curriculum. It became (I think) one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences for that then-Senior BFA cohort, and I was stoked for the opportunity to guide them through it. . Each of the teams produced a stellar concept for their mural design, but in the end only one team’s could be selected to be installed. And that team was Team Cheetah. Yes, I give my group projects’ teams silly names. No, they don’t get a say. . 10:30 this morning was a beautiful time to watch 2/3 of the Cheetahs witness the results of their efforts, started nearly two years ago. I’m wicked proud of these burgeoning killer designers and extremely honored to have been invited along to the Hyatt’s promo video shoot. Stay tuned for that later in September! . Up for grabs for the low, low price of FREE, is a pencil drawing of Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov (7 September 1939 – 19 May 2017) … Stan is widely credited with averting the likely outbreak of nuclear war on September 26, 1983, at the height of the Cold War. By defying standard Soviet military protocol in favor of logic and reason, this lone duty officer stationed at the command center for the Oko nuclear early-warning system, very likely steered our timeline away from WWIII and towards, well…… what we have now. I guess. … ANYHOW. Stan was a real mensch and on September 26, 2007, we paid tribute to his heroic actions by featuring this slapdash rendering of his visage on one of the “This Day in History” covers on AdultSwim.com. … This piece is up for grabs mainly because I want to practice my framing skills. So, I’ve been teaching Branding and Logo/Identit So, I’ve been teaching Branding and Logo/Identity design in one form or another for about seven years, but it’d been a minute since I’d actually undergone the process myself for a client. When a couple of pals announced they were opening a comic store in the neighborhood, I practically demanded that I design the logo for it. A lifelong comic book freak and nerdy at all angles, this was basically a dream project. . It was also unexpectedly challenging, in terms of developing a concept. My goal was to not do something that was overtly comic-book-y, while also not veering off into Incongruity Land, just of the sake of not doing “the expected”. . The final chosen concept walks that line pretty well, I think. The core shape of the logo is taken from an overhead view of the neighborhood layout, while the skewed grid arrangement of the letterforms alludes to both comic book panels and the arrangement of the businesses within the East Atlanta Village. The individual letters were given subtle tweaks to hint at the historical canon of comic book characters and design elements. Finally, the color option that won out (by a single vote, apparently) is the classic Primary Palette, which harkens back to the pre-digital printing processes of the Golden Age of comics. . And there you have it: the East Atlanta Comics logo. This project was a lot of fun and was extremely helpful in boosting my confidence in my work, which had taken a solid cupshot from being unemployed for a little over a year.
